Courtyard with flowerbeds by the City Nursery
Alternating flowerbeds are very popular with the public and, despite their modest size, attract a great deal of attention with their colour and flowering splendour. The City Nursery therefore treats the subject with particular care and diligently plans the design of each flowerbed. As a result, each flowerbed blooms differently several times a year. The beds in front of St Paul's Church are planted twice a year: the spring flowerbed is planted in October and replaced in May by the summer and autumn planting.
Most of the current stock of trees dates back to 1934, with the exception of a few replacement plantings since the turn of the millennium. At the foot of the front courtyard are venerable magnolias, which attract a large number of onlookers every spring for photos of all kinds. However, special care must be taken: climbing the trees is prohibited, as otherwise cracks and fungal infestation could seriously endanger the magnolias. So it's best to admire them with your eyes from a noble distance!
False cypress trees (along with hollies and ivy tendrils) line the street sides of Arnold Böcklin-Strasse and Steinenring, while maple trees and yew bushes at the far end round off the area facing Paulusgasse. Part of the rear terrace and the street lights on the Steinenring are planted with climbing Boston ivy.
